Currently, the available NBME CBSSA forms are Form 18, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 and are considered the best and most accurate way to assess one's predicted performance on the USMLE Step 1. However, as of March 24th, 2021, the NBME has retired all of the old CBSSA NBME forms and replaced them with 6 new NBME forms.

Answer explanations were not added to these forms. However, updated forms 9, 10 and 11, which became available for ordering on July 28, 2021, contain in-depth answer explanations.

The Medicine Shelf exam is formatted as an online test consisting of 110 questions which must be answered in 165 minutes. It shares the same interface as the USMLE Step exams, with each question presented as a hypothetical clinical scenario.

There are six available Step 1 practice tests, three tests for Step 2 CK, and one test for Step 3. Taking six NBME tests would be awfully grueling and might have you walking the fine line between well-prepared and burnt out, so tread lightly after your third test.

Many students ask, “Which is the most important NBME?” or “How do I decide which NBMEs to take?” Based on informal student reporting, NBME 28 and UWSA 2 are the most correlated with Step 1 performance.
