This waste includes discarded tea leaves, buds and tender stems of tea plants. If the tea waste is not disposed properly, it can pollute the environment like soil, water and air3.

Background: Tea waste is the residue that remains after tea leaves have been extracted by hot water to obtain water-soluble components. The waste contains a re-usable energy substrate and nutrients which may pollute the environment if they are not dealt with appropriately.

Collect your used tea leaves in a tin or Tupperware box on the side and weekly sprinkle on your flower beds, no need to dry them out first. You can also mix them into soil or compost before planting new plants. The nutrient-rich leaves will help plants grow, rose plants especially like chagra!

By definition, tea “waste” has little, if any, economic value. It's a throwaway: dust, bits and pieces of twigs, damaged fragments of leaf, floor sweepings, stalks, and leftover detritus that doesn't meet the standards or processes that result in it becoming part of the packaged end product.

Subsequently, the total tea waste produced by the respective factories after processing is around 1,90,400 tonnes [10]. Over 1.2 billion kilograms of tea were produced in India in the financial year 2021, the majority of which were contributed by the states of West Bengal and Assam.

Waste tea leaves can be a great source of organic material for gardens and compost piles. Tea leaves contain the three big nutrients termed NPK, i.e. nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Tea Board was set up as a statutory body on 1st April, 1954 as per Section (4) of the Tea Act, 1953. As an apex body, it looks after the overall development of the tea industry.
