A mock code, which is defined as a simulation exercise with a mannequin/human patient simulator that has no respiratory effort and/or no carotid pulse, helps to encourage interprofessional teams to collaborate and improve their teamwork and fast response skills [9,10].

Many health care facilities—including hospitals—routinely conduct mock codes, usually quarterly. Depending on the time of day, location of the patient, and other variables, the code team's response time could vary, wasting critical minutes.

Objective: The objective of the Mock Code Blue drill is to evaluate staff competency in the management of cardiac/respiratory arrest or medical emergency in which additional staff assistance is required. Required Drill Frequency: Determine a time frame requirement for drills ie quarterly, monthly, bi monthly etc.

A code blue consists of the nurse activating the code, sharing known clinical information to the team, performing chest compressions, monitoring the patient, and evaluating the entire code blue process.

PRIMARY NURSE – calls the code, provides chest compressions until relieved, gives information to Team Leader about the patient, reviews the chart – orders, advanced directives, last labs and vital signs, etc.
