Pennsylvania fully exempts all income from Social Security, as well as payments from retirement accounts, like 401(k)s and IRAs. It also exempts pension income for seniors age 60 or older. Gross receipts shall be exempt from the tax to the extent that gross receipts are derived from sales for resale or sales of electric energy within the limits of its service territory as set forth in 15 Pa. C.S. § 7406 (relating to competition by electric cooperatives).

Florida - A tax of 2.5% is imposed on "gross receipts from the sale, delivery, or transportation of natural gas, manufactured gas, or electricity to a retail consumer in Florida," referring to utility companies (suppliers of electrical power).

A gross receipts tax is applied to a company's gross sales, without deductions for a firm's business expenses, like costs of goods sold and compensation.

Major items exempt from the tax include food (not ready-to-eat); candy and gum; most clothing; textbooks; computer services; pharmaceutical drugs; sales for resale; and residential heating fuels such as oil, electricity, gas, coal and firewood. The Pennsylvania sales tax rate is 6 percent.
