AR 635-200 Active Duty Enlisted Administrative Separations.

What Does Administrative Discharge Mean? Administrative separation or administrative discharge is the military's way of firing you. It means your branch of service either doesn't have enough evidence of misconduct to punish you with an Article 15, or you just “aren't working out” for them.

This regulation sets policies, standards, and procedures to ensure the readiness and competency of the force while providing for the orderly administrative separation of Soldiers for a variety of reasons. Readiness is promoted by maintaining high standards of conduct and performance.

While an administrative discharge from the military is less severe than a court-martial, it can still have lifelong, significant effects upon one's employability, eligibility for Veterans' Benefits, and social standing.

An administrative separation is a process applied to a service member who is seen to have violated the standards, practices, or codes of military law or conduct in some substantive way but whose case doesn't warrant the full spectacle of a court-martial.

Per: AR 635-200 (Unless otherwise annotated) “Processed for Separation,” means that separation action will be initiated and processed through the chain of command to the separation authority for appropriate action. This does not mean that the soldier will be separated.

635-200, Chap 4. That provision allows for a service member to be separated upon expiration of enlistment or fulfillment of service obligation. The separation code or separation program designator was "MBK." This code is used when there is a voluntary release or transfer to another service component.
