On September 17, 1971, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command was established as a major Army command. The CID Command was vested with command and control of all Army criminal investigation activities and resources worldwide.

To be considered for the program, applicants must have a bachelor's degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Computer Science, Computer Forensics, Digital Forensics, Legal Studies, Accounting, Finance, Psychology or Biology.

The division is a separate military investigative force with investigative autonomy; CID special agents, both military and civilian, report through the CID chain of command to the USACID Director, who reports directly to the Under Secretary of the Army and the Secretary of the Army.
