Resolution Field Resolution is a special field in JIRA. It has an initial value of 'Unresolved', which means the field is NULL in the database. It is ALWAYS required when it appears on the screen. ONLY display it on the screen during a transition to the status where you want it set.

In the Fields section, click Field configurations. Click Configure next to the field configuration you wish to edit. You will see “Required” next to fields that have already been marked required. Click Optional to remove this requirement.

You don't, there is no way to set the Resolution field to not be required. Jira is hard coded for the Resolution field to always be required when it appears on a screen.

Resolution is a system Field and it's always mandatory. You cannot make it optional from Configuration scheme. You need to remove it from create/edit screen and try creating a task. Try removing it and create a new task.

Resolution in JIRA In order to do this, you will firstly have to obtain the resolution ID that you want to exclude. Here's how: Go to the Resolution tab under Issues section > Issue Attributes section. You should see all the resolution options.

This work around worked for me. Remove the Resolution field from all views but the Closed screen. Remove the default value for the Resolution field. Set a Validator up so that the Resolution field must be changed when transitioning to Closed.
