In 1971, Mr. Yuk was created by the Pittsburgh Poison Center. Since then, Mr. Yuk has been used to educate children and adults about poison prevention and to promote poison center awareness.

Mr. Yuk, the famous green face with his tongue sticking out, was developed in 1971 by Pittsburgh pediatrician and Carnegie Museum of Natural History board member Dr. Richard Moriarty, who also developed the Pittsburgh Poison Center and the Poison Center Network.

The stickers are non-toxic and safe to eat. You may even come across what looks like a public service announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, saying: Even the glue is okay to eat. The FDA classifies the pressure-sensitive adhesive as an indirect food additive that is safe to ingest.

Mr. Yuk was first introduced in Pittsburgh 50 years ago in 1971, and over the next few years, Mr. Yuk stickers gained nationwide usage. The stickers usually contain phone numbers of poison control centers that may give guidance if poisoning has occurred or is suspected.
