To qualify for retirement, a member must serve for at least 20 years (exceptions may be made in disability cases). Retirement pay depends on the length of active duty service, pay grade and the retirement plan that is in place at the time a member enters the service.

Generally your enlistment runs for 8 years in some combination of active duty (full time), reserve (weekend drill) and ready reserve (on call) obligations. Currently the CG offers 2, 3, and 4 year active duty contracts. OCS grads enlist at the beginning and then get a 3 year active duty obligation on graduation.

Generally speaking, enlistees do not stay for this long and do not make the Coast Guard a career for themselves, since in most cases, enlistees commit to 8 years of service. Depending on the terms of the contract, 2 to 6 years are spent on active duty and the rest spent in the Coast Guard Reserves.
