Hardship vs Dependency. Terminology can get confusing because "hardship" and "dependency" discharges are often both loosely labeled "hardship." Specifically, a hardship discharge is when the financial needs of family member(s) require more than the military member can provide while remaining in the military.

The Criteria Generally, this discharge requires severe medical, psychological or financial problems in the member's immediate family. Medical and psychological problems are termed dependency, while financial problems are described as hardship, though many military personnel use the terms interchangeably.

Orders take up to 15 working days to process once all required documents are brought to the Transition Center by the Soldier. The Enlisted ETS Separation Briefing is extremely important. It provides a step by step process of what needs to be completed in order to separate from active duty.

Counselors at the GI Rights Hotline have helped many people in the military get honorably discharged for hardship/dependency. Usually within 4-10 weeks after applying, people are free from their military obligations and able to help their family members.

Request a conditional release to apply to a specific commissioning program/specific branch of service. Submit a NAVPERS 1306/7 Electronic Personnel Action Request to their CO. Upon CO's positive endorsement, forward to PERS-832 via MNCC (askmncc@navy.mil).

An example of a Hardship Discharge would be if you are married and have children, but your spouse dies, leaving you to the sole parent to children.

A hardship discharge is intended to be used as an instrument to alleviate personal hardship encountered by an enlisted member's immediate family when discharge is the only solution.

A voluntary administrative separation occurs when a US service member completes their term of service and leaves the military. Involuntary administrative separation is a nonjudicial, yet formal, process of removing a service member from the military.
