The propensity to fall asleep is rated as 0, 1, 2, or 3, where 0 corresponds to “never” and 3 to “a high chance of dozing” (Table F17–2). The maximum score is 24, and normal is assumed to be 10 or less. ESS scores of 16 or greater are associated with severe sleepiness.

Scores can be interpreted as follows: 0-5 lower normal daytime sleepiness. 6-10 normal daytime sleepiness. 11-12 mild excessive daytime symptoms.

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is widely used in the field of sleep medicine as a subjective measure of a patient's sleepiness. The test is a list of eight situations in which you rate your tendency to become sleepy on a scale of 0, no chance of dozing, to 3, high chance of dozing.

For instance, scores of 11-15 are shown to indicate the possibility of mild to moderate sleep apnea, where a score of 16 and above indicates the possibility of severe sleep apnea or narcolepsy.

It is available in many different languages. The 1997 version of the ESS is the standard version that can be used by most adults. A license is needed to use it, whether or not license fees are payable.
