An approved ATF Form 6 - Part I (5330.3A) is required to import firearms, ammunition, and defense articles into the United States or any possession thereof, except for certain exempt importations prescribed in 27 CFR Parts 447, 478 and 479.

ATF F 6A, Release and Receipt of Imported Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War is used to release firearms, firearms parts, ammunition and other defense articles to you from U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

The ATF Form 6 NIA is valid for one year from the date of approval.

Form 6NIA - Application/Permit for Temporary Importation of Firearms and Ammunition by Nonimmigrant Aliens (ATF Form 5330.3D) This form is used to apply to temporarily import firearms and ammunition for lawful hunting or sporting purposes. For use by visiting foreign nationals (nonimmigrant aliens) only.

NOTE: It typically takes the Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch (FEIB) personnel four to six weeks to process a properly executed ATF Form 6 import permit application.

ATF Form 1 application may take 60 days to up to 5 months to process, depending on how you are going to apply. With a paper-based manual submission, expect the wait time to be as long as 5 months, while with electronic submission (eFiling) the wait time reduces to 10 days.

Average Approval/Wait Time: ~7 to 12 months. The average wait time is 7 to 12 months with outliers being approved before and after the 7 to 12 month range. If your application gets stuck in the pending background check stage then you can see your wait time go past 12 months.
