In the Solvay process, sodium carbonate is produced from brine and limestone with ammonia acting as a catalyst through a series of chemical reactions.

The Solvay process results in soda ash (predominantly sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)) from brine (as a source of sodium chloride (NaCl)) and from limestone (as a source of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)). The overall process is: 2 NaCl + CaCO3 Na2CO3 + CaCl.

Sodium carbonate is prepared by passing carbon dioxide through ammonia that gives ammonium carbonate. Subsequently ammonium carbonate is converted to ammonium hydrogen carbonate that reacts with sodium chloride to precipitate out sodium hydrogen carbonate. Sodium hydrogen carbonate later forms sodium carbonate.

Caustic soda is stronger than soda ash. ... Caustic soda has the advantage of mixing to a clear solution, but it costs more than soda ash and generates a considerable amount of heat when it's mixed with water. Soda ash always leaves a residue at the bottom of the container.

Dry sodium bicarbonate is heated in rotary furnace called "CALCINER" to give anhydrous sodium carbonate or soda ash. Carbon dioxide is recirculated to carbonation tower.

Essentially, these methods involved saturating a concentrated brine solution with ammonia to form ammonium salts and then with carbon dioxide (made by burning lime). This produces ammonium bicarbonate, which reacts with the brine to form ammonium chloride and sodium carbonate.

The Solvay process is an industrial process that uses limestone (CaCO3 ) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2 ) which reacts with ammonia (NH3 ) dissolved in brine (concentrated NaCl(aq)) to produce sodium carbonate.
