Visiting the Illinois State Archives Reference Room — To locate a death certificate in our Reference Room, the following information from the database will be needed: decedent's name; date of death; name of county and, if provided, township where the death took place; and death certificate number.

You can search most state archives online and easily access them from the comfort of your own home. These searches are also free. State archives often have death certificates that date to the founding of their state and beyond in some cases.

Death records are not public records and are only available to those who have a personal or property right interest (“property right” is defined as something that it is owned, tangible such as a car title or a property deed) with the decedent.

There are no Illinois State Government websites that provide online access to death records. Death records in the State of Illinois are only accessible either through the Illinois Department of Public Health or the Local County Clerk's office where the death occurred.

(c) The funeral director who first assumes custody of a dead body shall be responsible for filing a completed death certificate.

Death record searches are free, but a small copy fee will be billed for records found. IRAD provides uncertified copies only. Certified copies must be requested from the county clerk.
