VAAP eligibility criteria requires that the student receives a curriculum significantly reduced in complexity and depth and the student's disability impacts other aspects of their instruction, such as communication, behavior, and/or self-help skills.

SOL tests measure the success of students in meeting the Board of Education's expectations for learning and achievement. All items on SOL tests are reviewed by Virginia classroom teachers for accuracy and fairness, and teachers also assist the Virginia Board of Education in setting proficiency standards for the tests.

The Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) is designed to evaluate the performance of students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-8 and high school.

Since alternative assessment is all about putting knowledge to work, design effective performance tests to help you rate a student's level of skill or knowledge. A performance test requires the learners to execute complex tasks while the instructor observes how they go about them.

Student performance is graded on a scale of 0-600 with 400 representing the minimum level of acceptable proficiency and 500 representing advanced proficiency.

Description: The Virginia Grade Level Alternative (VGLA) is available for certain Limited-English Proficiency (LEP) students and students with disabilities in grades 3 through 8 as an alternative assessment for the Standards of Learning (SOL) testing.

The Virginia Essentialized Standards of Learning (VESOL) are Reading, Mathematics and Science Standards of Learning that are reduced in depth, breadth and complexity to make them relevant, accessible and appropriate for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
