Nursing orientation plays a pivotal role in the competency and retention of newly hired registered nurses. Effective orientation and precepting programs produce nurses who provide competent, quality patient care and are enculturated as productive members of the healthcare team.

For example, your nurse orientation program could be two days long, or it could be a week long. You may be told to wear scrubs, or you may be asked to wear business casual attire on your first day. You may have to travel to a nearby facility to attend part of your orientation, or everything may take place on site.

Approved Medication Assistive Personnel ( AMAP ), are trained by OHFLAC approved registered professional nurses and must work under the supervision of the registered professional nurse ( RN ).

Most new nurses are in an orientation period. This period is typically 1-2 months long, depending on your place of hire. During this time you are with another nurse and you work side-by-side with this nurse.

The classroom orientation can vary from a few days to a few weeks depending on the health care facility. Once the majority of classroom orientation is complete, you will orient with an assigned preceptor or mentor on the unit you were hired to work on.
