Delaware State University is the only HBCU in Delaware and has been since its inception in 1891. One of its closest neighbors, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, is the oldest HBCU in the country and was founded in 1831. Lincoln University is also close by, located in Pennsylvania.

In November 1949, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education revoked the accreditation of the institution. This was a severe blow to the prestige of the College.
