The term “frequency” in applied behavior analysis and behavior measurement generally refers to cycles per unit time, or a count (usually of behavior) divided by the time during which it occurred. In statistics, however, the term refers to a count of items in a data set.

Frequency (or event) recording is a way to measure the number of times a behavior occurs within a given period. Frequency recording is best for behaviors with a distinct beginning and end.

Frequency: Used to document how often a target behavior occurs. (Place a tally mark in the appropriate box each time the target behavior occurs.) Duration: Used to document how long a behavior occurs and to determine an average amount of time for repetitive behaviors.

For example, if you were tracking how often a child says “thank you,” you would mark it down each time they said it. This data is then used to calculate the rate of the behavior (i.e. how many times per minute or hour it occurred).

Examples of frequency data in ABA include any time you count how often a specific behavior occurs. Frequency data helps measure both positive and negative behavior. For example, you can monitor the frequency of tantrums or polite hand-raising.
