The Army performs 100-percent drug testing once soldiers report to their advanced individual training site (AIT). Drug testing is completed on a random basis thereafter. The Army does not and will not test recruits at basic training.

To earn a waiver, applicants must score at least 50 points on the Armed Forces Qualification Test, have no felony or misdemeanor convictions, possess a high school diploma and be otherwise medically qualified for service. They must meet all other qualification standards as well.

Consequences of a Failed Military Drug Test Depending on the branch of service, recruits who test positive for drugs may be able to reapply 90 days after their previous test. However, should you fail the second test, you can be barred from serving in any branch of the military going forward.

A positive test result will likely result in significant administrative or disciplinary action against a military member, to include court-martial. Essentially all branches of the military have adopted a “Zero Tolerance” approach to drug use.

The British Army takes a zero-tolerance approach to substance misuse. Drugs affect the fitness and reliability of service people and have a corrosive effect on operational effectiveness. Fail a drugs test, and you can expect to be discharged from the service.

Failing a military drug test will most likely result in administrative or disciplinary action against the individual. It may even result in court-martial charges.

Failing a drug test in the Army may result in a discharge, which can range from a general discharge to an other-than-honorable discharge or a dishonorable discharge, depending on the circumstances surrounding the drug test failure and the service member's military record.

Civilians are mandated to be tested if they fall into one of the following categories: Employees occupying Test Designated Positions, or TDP, and/or Department of Transportation, or DOT, safety sensitive positions.
