OVERALL ENROLLMENT RATES AND STUDENT CHARACTERISTICS Band enrollment rates closely follow, with 11% of students enrolling in at least one band course at some point during high school.

A school band is a group of student musicians who rehearse and perform instrumental music together. A concert band is usually under the direction of one or more conductors (band directors).

Band allows students a chance to practice emotions, fine motor skills, discipline, rigor, and persistence. Band is a safe place where all students can develop discipline, teamwork and the love of making music together. Band is collaborative! It teaches patience, persistence, and responsibility.

Music is exacting. It's no wonder that kids who play music tend to do better in math and science — there is little room for error in playing a piece of music correctly. Playing in a school band or orchestra takes this challenge and increases it exponentially because it puts a child in performance mode.

Provides opportunities for socialization Providing a nurturing environment such as the school band can also help students become more confident in their social skills — an important trait that is useful throughout life.

Study shows that teenagers who learn an instrument in high school become better readers. Playing an instrument is good for your brain. Compared to nonmusicians, young children who strum a guitar or blow a trombone become better readers with better vocabularies.
