Check for drainage holes Most plant pots are made with drainage holes so that excess water can drain away (if it can't, the plant will rot). If a pot doesn't have holes, you'll need to make some. One way to do this is to drill into the base several times with a masonry drill bit.

Sometimes a plant is already planted in a pot with no drainage at all. The best solution in this case is to take it to a sink, water it, then after a few minutes turn it on its side for a minute or two to let excess water drain out.

How Many Holes to Drill in a Planter. A hand drill will work best for this project. For small to medium planters (4” – 12” in diameter) it's good to drill a couple of holes that are no larger than ½ of an inch.
