Care after bypass surgery aims to reduce the risk factors for heart disease and includes strategies to help patients and family members stop smoking, control high blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, begin exercising regularly, reduce weight if necessary, and reduce stress.

The following aspects of postoperative care apply to all patients who've had CABG surgery. Maintain airway patency. Monitor the patient's pulmonary status closely and report any changes, such as pulmonary congestion, dyspnea, or SpO 2 below 92%. Follow the weaning protocol per orders.

Gently wash your incision each day with mild soap and water. Pat the incision dry with a towel. Your doctor may recommend that you wear compression stockings during the day to reduce swelling in your leg and to help prevent blood from pooling and forming clots. Keep your legs elevated to also help reduce swelling.

Even though you may feel drained physically and emotionally, it's important to follow guidelines for good self-care: Get dressed every day. Walk daily within your limits. Get plenty of rest. Resume hobbies and social activities you enjoy. Visit with others. Join a support group.

Avoid heavy lifting for 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. You must also avoid tennis, baseball, golf and other activities that result in extreme shoulder movement. No pushing, pulling or lifting greater than 5 pounds for at least 4 weeks. No driving for at least 4 weeks after your operation.
