The Apollo® EXV thermal expansion relief valves are designed primarily to relieve excessive water pressure build-up caused by thermal expansion. In a closed hot water piping system, as water is heated, thermal expansion occurs.

Depends upon your water system setup. Seems as you have a well, pump and pressure tank. If you have a check valve in there to prevent backflow, then YES, you'll need a thermal expansion tank. Presumably you already have a water heater that works OK without one, so you may not need one for the new WH.

Thermal expansion relief valves (TERVs) have been on the market for over 20 years. Instead of temporarily displacing and storing water like a traditional expansion tank, a TERV discharges the water to prevent explosions or other damage to the water heater or surrounding structure.

Thermal Relief Valve protects pressure washer pumps operating in a safe temperature range to prevent overheating. When water temperature reaches above 145º F, pump seals may fail. The thermal relief valve will open to release hot water and allow cold water to enter the pump.
