Cellular respiration is the process of using oxygen in the mitochondria to chemically break down organic molecules such as glucose. This releases the energy stored in the bonds of glucose. In this process, molecules of water and carbon dioxide are released as waste products.

Both are processes within the cell which make chemical energy available for life. Photosynthesis transforms light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose, and cellular respiration releases the energy from glucose to build ATP, which does the work of life.

Cellular respiration is how the cell breaks down food molecules like glucose and captures their energy in molecules called ATP. ATP, the 'currency' the cell can use, is then broken down to power the cells' business like building proteins, contracting muscles, or multiplying.

If exercise continues beyond 90 seconds, the cells rely on aerobic respiration to make energy, increasing the rate of aerobic respiration. Weight training and sprinting rely on anaerobic respiration, while running a half-mile or longer race or taking an aerobic dance class engages aerobic respiration.

The stages of cellular respiration include glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, the citric acid or Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.

The main function of cellular respiration is to synthesize biochemical energy. Cellular respiration is essential to both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells because this biochemical energy is produced to fuel many metabolic processes, such as biosynthesis, locomotion, and transportation of molecules across membranes.

Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic processes and reactions that breaks down glucose and produces ATP. Cellular respiration is a redox reaction, i.e., both oxidation & reduction occurs.

Respiration is one of the key ways a cell releases chemical energy to fuel cellular activity. The overall reaction occurs in a series of biochemical steps, some of which are redox reactions.
