In addition to the usual religious and literary societies, Yankton was very strong in music, forensics and drama. Eventually, a debt of a million dollars and an enrollment of just 240 students became too much. After 103 years, Yankton College closed at the end of the fall semester of 1984.

Yankton, in fact, is a thriving music, art and theatre town. Besides performances at the college and at Yankton High School, the Lewis and Clark Theater Company performs in Dakota Theatre downtown, and on summer evenings at Lakeside Theater by Lewis and Clark Lake.

Built in 1916 in the Prairie School style; now part of the Yankton High School Historical District and is an apartment and assisted living facility for senior citizens.
