You do not have to measure the range of every joint of someone's body. The main areas to assess are an adequate range at the hips for a seated posture and determining what the angles of the seating system will be.

Once the pelvis and trunk are supported in the most neutral sitting posture that is comfortable, check the posture of the head and neck, hips, thighs and lower legs. Use your hands to find out how close to neutral each body part can comfortably move. Continue to check how any change affects the rest of the body.

To assess the seated position effectively, you must: Ensure the seat depth matches the person's leg length correctly. Are the hips level? Ensure the seat or footplate height is set for correct loading of the legs and feet. Make sure the seat cushion is given maximum pressure management.

Pelvic positioning and stability affect the alignment of the head, trunk, upper and lower extremities. Asymmetrical pelvic alignment may increase risk of pressure injury development, so the pelvis is usually assessed first in the MAT.

Check that the footrests/leg rests are in the locked position towards the front of the chair and that the footplates are folded upward to vertical position. Alternatively, remove the footrests/leg rests from the wheelchair.

It is a form of biomechanical assessment and physical evaluation, forms the second part of the Wheelchair Assessment Process, and consists of three elements, with information from each of these assisting wheelchair service personnel to decide how much support the wheelchair user needs.
