NCNW BACKGROUND Its mission is to lead, advocate for and empower women of African descent, their families and communities. NCNW was founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, influential educator and activist.

The scholarships will be open to undergraduate and graduate students of any discipline, with each scholarship awarding students $10,000 towards their studies.

Interested in becoming a new member? Please complete the NCNW Application Form and ensure both Section and National Dues are paid. Life Membership dues are a one-time payment of $500.

The Dorothy I. Height Building, headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women, located at 633 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington, D.C. NCNW serves as a super organization that acts as a cohesive umbrella for the other African-American groups that already existed.

With an incredible ability in political organization and a deep dedication to the struggle for equality, Height was a central component to many civil rights advancements that the NCNW helped achieve during her four-decade-long leadership. The NCNW has 25,000 members and contributors.

Mary McLeod Bethune and other famous NCNW figures such as Dorothy Height and Vivian Carter Mason were groundbreaking figures for Black women's rights and education. Their legacy continues through the NCNW today. They are remembered as inspirational leaders, advocates for civil rights, and important leaders of the NCNW.
