Not every route used by the Spanish during their exploration and settlement of New Spain met the requirements for designation as a camino real. Caminos reales were routes that connected economically important Spanish towns, capitals of provinces and mines that possessed charters conferring royal privileges.

Notable alumni of the school include actresses Tiffany Haddish and America Ferrera. El Camino Real Charter High School's modern facilities include a performing arts theater, a library, computer labs, a gymnasium, tennis courts, and new sports fields.

In California, the name El Camino Real (“The Royal Road”) has resonated for generations. Extending over 600 miles from San Diego in the south to Sonoma in the north, El Camino Real was, in essence, California's first highway, connecting 21 Franciscan missions.

Its very name implies a regal history. Translated from the Spanish, it means "The King's Highway." Legend has it that El Camino Real in Silicon Valley is part of the historic Mission Trail, an ancient road that connects the Spanish missions, which stretch like a string of pearls along the California coast.

The name El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro initially identified a main thoroughfare that began to be developed in 1550 and was used to move silver from mines at Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato south to the viceroyal capital of Mexico City.
