ADLs address those very basic activities that allow a patient to care for themselves, such as bathing and using the bathroom. On the other hand, iADLs are more complex, but they are also important to getting a patient back to their lives. Examples of iADLs include balancing a checkbook and managing medications.

An IADL, or Instrumental Activity of Daily Living, are more complex sets of skills we need in order to live independently. These skills are: using the telephone, shopping, preparing meals, housekeeping, using transportation, taking medication(s), and managing finances.

The major domains of IADLs include cooking, cleaning, transportation, laundry, and managing finances.

Both ADLs and IADLs refer to key life tasks that need to be accomplished daily. ADLs, or activities of daily living, are more basic tasks that are essential to independent living. IADLs, or instrumental activities of daily living, are more complex tasks that are still a necessary part of everyday life.

When your child's occupational therapist talks about “instrumental activities of daily living,” or IADLs, they're referring to the higher level skills that are required to not only take care of yourself, but to live independently.

The activities of daily living are classified into basic ADLs and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). The basic ADLs (BADL) or physical ADLs are those skills required to manage one's basic physical needs, including personal hygiene or grooming, dressing, toileting, transferring or ambulating, and eating.

Activities of daily living (ADL) are also called self-help or self-care activities. These activities can include everyday tasks such as dressing, self-feeding, bathing, laundry, and / or meal preparation.
