For years, school districts in a number of states have been charging parents for transportation as a convenience if they live within a certain distance from school, often two miles or less. Those who live farther away traditionally have gotten free bus service.

The famous yellow bus has been driving children to school since the 1930s in Canada. Today, between 45,000 to 50,000 school buses are currently in service in Canada, the majority of which still run on diesel.

Yellow school buses are most commonly associated with North America, where federal and state/provincial regulations have influenced its design characteristics, including its yellow color. When loading or unloading students, yellow school buses are given traffic priority.

However, not all school buses are yellow. School buses in Germany are run by regional transport groups and, therefore, look like regular intercity buses.

School bus yellow is a color that was specifically formulated for use on school buses in North America in 1939. Originally officially named National School Bus Chrome, the color is now officially known in Canada and the U.S. as National School Bus Glossy Yellow.

US and Canadian yellow school buses go to die to Central America. There are hundreds of them in countries such as Panama or Nicaragua, but I don't recall ever seeing them working school routes; they typically carry general fare-paying passengers along country roads (and sometimes in cities too).

Italy. In Italy, school buses are typically painted yellow or orange. The vehicles used for student transport are usually minibuses. As in North America, school buses run on fixed routes and stops.
