MROs are typically located near major airports. Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) are granted the right to operate at an airport and provide services such as fueling, hangaring, tie-down and parking, aircraft rental, aircraft maintenance, and flight instruction.

Maintenance, repair, and overhaul, or most often referred to by the acronym MRO, is a phrase widely used these days to describe aircraft maintenance activity.

§ 145.55 Duration and renewal of certificate. (a) A certificate or rating issued to a repair station located in the United States is effective from the date of issue until the repair station surrenders the certificate and the FAA accepts it for cancellation, or the FAA suspends or revokes it.

Another more general term used throughout the industry is MRO, referring to repair sta- tions as maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities. The term MRO is often used to describe a repair station, but is sometimes used by FBOs or other non-certificated companies employing groups of airframe and powerplant mechanics.

§ 145.1 Applicability. This part also contains the rules a certificated repair station must follow related to its performance of maintenance, preventive maintenance, or alterations of an aircraft, airframe, aircraft engine, propeller, appliance, or component part to which part 43 applies.

The term Repair Station refers to a maintenance facility that has a certificate issued by the FAA under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations ( 14 CFR ) Part 145 and is engaged in the maintenance, inspection, and alteration of aircraft and aircraft products.

Cost-effectiveness Since OEMs offer overall maintenance packages rather than smaller repair jobs, airlines are wary of to what level the full lifecycle support costs could spiral. MROs, on the other hand, have proven they can return an aircraft back to service as quickly and safely as possible at minimum expense.

The term Repair Station refers to a maintenance facility that has a certificate issued by the FAA under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations ( 14 CFR ) Part 145 and is engaged in the maintenance, inspection, and alteration of aircraft and aircraft products.
