Print-to-speech skills are those required for decoding. To read words, graphemes (letters and letter combinations) must be translated into speech sounds, then blended together to produce spoken words in our vocabulary. Speech-to-print skills are those required for encoding.

​Concepts of print refers to the awareness of 'how print works'. This includes the knowledge of the concept of what books, print, and written language are, and how they function. It encompasses a number of understandings that allow the reading process to take place including: understanding that print conveys a message.

In O-G or traditional phonics, the scope and sequence is typically organized around a mix of sound and print, sometimes introducing one or more sound-symbol correspondences as a way to spell a sound, other times a visual or orthographic pattern such as vowel team, or vowel-consonant-e, or open syllable.

In a speech-to-print approach, instruction builds knowledge of the system from spoken to written words. The lesson begins with a focus on an aspect of speech (phoneme, syllable, or morpheme), as these linguistic elements serve as Velcro or mental parking spots for the letters in printed words.
