Most sixth-graders choose one of the following instruments: flute. clarinet. alto saxophone. trumpet/cornet. trombone. baritone. percussion (bells, drums, cymbals, etc.)

In general, parents should not let a student switch instruments within the first few months of playing. Many times, a school band/orchestra director will recommend a switch for a student. Switches to oboe, bassoon, double bass, and french horn often happen in school due to ensemble needs.

The easiest marching band instruments are the clarinet, flute, and the smallest bass drum. Many students start out learning these instruments in middle school, and they are very straightforward to play.

M/J Band 3: A more advanced level class for students who are ready for challenging literature and comprehensive study in music.

Modern band is an instrumental and vocal school music program taught in a growing number of public schools systems in the U.S. Instrumentation typically includes acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, keyboard, vocals, computers and percussion instruments.

For example, in Grade 8 Band, the Brass Family has five members: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium, Tuba. We will spent time with each of these instruments as a class and see/listen to some examples.
