The SUO is responsible for leading a group of cadets and serving as a role model for junior cadets. The SUO is also responsible for ensuring that NCC rules and regulations are followed, and for managing and organizing various NCC activities such as parades, camping, and training exercises.

The advantage of NCC is that it allows adolescents to develop their personality and character through discipline, teamwork, and adventure activities. The disadvantage of NCC is that it requires a lot of dedication and commitment from the cadets which may be difficult for some.

The NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens.

Girls have the same benefits as boys in NCC. Even in republic day parades they are treated equally with boys. Apart from parade, they may receive training on trekking, aeromodelling, firing, skeet shooting, sharp shooting, flying, horse raiding, swimming, chances to visit foreign countries.
