The Childhood Autism Rating Scale , 2nd Edition (CARS2) is designed as a clinical rating scale for the trained clinician to rate items indicative of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) after direct observation of the child. The form is used with individuals of all ages and in both clincial and research settings.

The Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS™) provides the first nationally standardized, norm-referenced ASD Rating Scale. This multi-informant measure helps identify symptoms, behaviors, and associated features of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years.

The Autism Program Environment Rating Scale-Preschool/Elementary (APERS-PE) is an environmental assessment designed to be used by an outside observer for program improvement and/or research. The full version of the APERS includes 64 items, a complex scoring system, and requires at least 4-6 hours to complete.

Total scores can range from a low of 15 to a high of 60; scores below 30 indicate that the individual is in the non-autistic range, scores between 30 and 36.5 indicate mild to moderate autism, and scores from 37 to 60 indicate severe autism (Schopler et al. 1988).

The most reliable and accurate test for diagnosing autism is a comprehensive assessment from a qualified mental health professional. This includes an evaluation of physical, psychological, and developmental factors that can help to identify signs of autism.

The CARS is a diagnostic assessment method that rates individuals on a scale ranging from normal to severe, and yields a composite score ranging from non-autistic to mildly autistic, moderately autistic, or severely autistic. The scale is used to observe and subjectively rate fifteen items.
