Maze is a standardized, group-administered measure of reading comprehension. Maze is administered to students in the fall of second grade through the spring of eighth grade. In Maze, the examiner presents students with a passage that has every seventh word removed and replaced with three options.

MAZE is a group-administered measure used as a benchmark assessment for upper grade students in reading. The passage begins with a complete sentence. For every remaining sentence, the 7th word is replaced with a word choice. The word choice is composed of 3 words: one correct choice and 2 distracters.

Give a title to the passage. Leave the first sentence unaltered. Begin with the second sentence and “delete” every seventh word. Add two distracter words to create 3 word choices.

The maze generally uses a standardized cloze format in which students read a text with at least 300 words that, after the first sentence, has every seventh word removed and replaced with three choices: the correct word and two incorrect words that served as distractors (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2011, 1992).

Maze testing generates a percentage score based on the number of correct selections out of the total available in the passage. Results are then assigned to one of the three reading ranges: frustration, instructional and independent. Researchers vary on the percentages for each of these reading ranges.

In Maze, the examiner presents students with a passage that has every seventh word removed and replaced with three options. The final score is the number of maze words selected correctly within 3 minutes minus one-half of the number of errors.

The Maze Adjusted Score, which compensates for guessing, is calculated based on the number of correct and incorrect responses. Half the number of incorrect responses are subtracted from the total correct responses, and the difference is rounded up to the nearest whole number.

Using standardized directions, students are asked to read a passage silently and to circle their word choices. By design, approximately every seventh word in the Maze passages has been replaced by a box containing the correct word and two distractor words.
