Injection pressures commonly range between 70 and 112 MPa (10–16 kpsi).

Injection pressures during the whole process should be above 1000–1200 bar for a good spray formation and air–fuel mixture; a tendency in practice to 1600–1800 bar and higher is noted. The total nozzle area should be as small as possible in relation to cylinder diameter for good combustion, particularly at part load.

Diesel engines require much stouter components primarily because of the higher cylinder pressures and high torque production. Cylinder pressures are creeping upward to 3,600 psi in modern turbocharged applications and over 8,000 psi in performance applications.

In many cases, the injector is mounted just like a spark plug would be in a gas engine. But unlike fuel-injected gas engines that inject fuel at 10-60 psi, diesel fuel-injection systems run in the 10,000-30,000-psi range.

Because of the need for positive injection into a very high-pressure environment, the pump develops great pressure—typically 15,000 psi (100 MPa) or more on newer systems.

Injected fuel quantity is the amount of fuel delivered to an engine cylinder per power stroke. It is often expressed in mm3/stroke or mg/stroke. Injection duration is the period of time during which fuel enters the combustion chamber from the injector.
