Baby rabbits need to stay with their mother until they are about 8 weeks old. Baby rabbits start nibbling on hay and pellets at about 2 weeks old. However, just because they start eating on their own does not mean they can be taken away from their mother.

Despite their reputation as low-maintenance starter pets, rabbits are actually better suited for older children that understand how to be responsible with the care of their pet. They are very social creatures that crave attention from their owners and will require a significant time and care commitment.

Pet stores and bunny dealers often buy rabbits when they're only 4 weeks old, because they're small and people think they look so cute when they're little. However, bunnies that young shouldn't be away from their moms.

Each animal should be bright, alert, and active. They should all have shiny, lush fur and be plump and well-fed. If any members of the litter are sickly, do not choose them or an apparently healthy littermate, as that animal may soon also become ill. Run your hands and eyes over the entire rabbit.

At a minimum, you would want the baby bunny to be 8 weeks of age AND well weaned from its mother (meaning it is eating and drinking completely on its own without loose stool or diarrhea). IDEALLY, find a bunny at least 12 weeks (3 months) old and weaned.
