The Tolowa are a tribe of Native Americans, who still resided in their traditional territories in Northwestern California and southern Oregon. For money the Tolowa used the dentalium shells that were the standard currency for most of the early northwestern people. No doubt the Tolowa received the dentalium shells from the people further north along the Pacific Coast, and traded them on down the coast to other California groups.

The Tolowas were fishing people. Tolowa men caught fish and mollusks from their canoes. They also hunted sea lions, birds, and small game. Tolowa women gathered acorns and ground them into meal, as well as collecting seaweed, berries, and other plants.

Today the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation consists of over 950 acres of tribal-owned land and has over 1900 Tribal Citizens. Dan'-taa-dvn (Del Norte County) is located in the heart of Taa-laa-waa-dvn (Tolowa Aboriginal Territory) on the most northwestern corner of present-day California.

Starting in 1851, eighty percent of the Tolowa people perished from mass murders by Euro-Americans under governor Peter Burnett. The Tolowa Holocaust began in 1851 and ended in 1856 in the Oregon Territory. Burnett was an open advocate of exterminating local California Indian tribes.
