Our History. We started MARTA with a commitment to making public transit a reliable service — one that boosts economic development and enhances the lives of people across Metro Atlanta. Our story began in the 1950s when people first started to recognize the importance of Atlanta's public transportation.

MARTA Mobility is our service that provides ADA Complementary Paratransit service to anyone unable to ride or disembark from our regular MARTA transit services. Riders must have a MARTA Mobility Photo ID Breeze Card to be able to request and board our MARTA Mobility buses.

MARTA's regular bus and rail service is wheelchair accessible and operators make the required ADA announcements to assist the visually impaired. Many disabled individuals use our system daily; however, a percentage of patrons cannot travel on regular buses or the rail system.

MARTA has 1,857 employees, and the revenue per employee ratio is $46,157. MARTA peak revenue was $85.7M in 2021.

You must have a Breeze card or ticket to receive a free transfer. Transfers are automatically loaded to the card or ticket when tapping to exit from a station or when tapping to board a bus. You're allowed up to four transfers within a three-hour period.

And in 1965, those proposals led to the passing of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Act — or as we know it today: MARTA.

The estimated base pay is $23 per hour.

Sales tax. In addition to fare collections, the MARTA budget is funded by a 1% sales tax in Fulton, Clayton and DeKalb counties along with limited federal money.

A public authority operated under Georgia law, MARTA is governed by a fifteen-member board of directors with representation from Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, and Gwinnett counties and the city of Atlanta. MARTA has more than 4,500 employees. Fares and a sales tax provide the bulk of the system's operating revenues.

Customers can load their Mobility Photo ID Breeze Cards at any of our Breeze Vending Machines around MARTA. They can also load their cards at MARTA RideStores or by calling media sales at 404-848-5000. And lastly, riders can load their cards online breezecard.com.

The salary of the CEO of Marta is $365,575 per year. Jeffery Parker is the CEO of MARTA and joined the regional transit agency in 2018. His contract expires in 2026. Jeffery Parker is also eligible for a 10% bonus of his base salary. MATRA operates in Atlanta, Georgia.
