AS9102 - Aerospace First Article Inspection The 9102 standard is used to standardize the documentation of First Article Inspection (FAI) in aviation, space, and defense. The standard covers processes from manufacturing small electrical components to large structural assemblies.

An AS9102 FAIR, or First Article Inspection Report, certifies that each sample was produced and inspected ing to the customer's specifications. AS9102 First Articles used by the aerospace and defense industries include 3 forms: Part Number Accountability, Product Accountability, and Characteristic Accountability.

The AS9100 Rev D defines First Article Inspection as a production process verification activity, so all designs should be completed before an FAI is conducted. Once the design is finalized and production processes have been determined, an FAI can be performed on the first production run.

FAI (AS9102B) is a unique standard updated by SAE to emphasize the value of the FAI process. Although AS9100 Rev D requires the production process verification required under Clause 8.5. 1.3, AS9102 itself is not a formal requirement – it is a guidance document, not something requiring certification.

The AS9102 is the detailed process that allows manufacturers and clients to capture the product requirements, inspect and document all product features and document the materials and processes used in manufacturing that product or assembly.

AS9102 is part of the widely adopted AS9100 quality management system for the aerospace industry. AS9102 is the standard that details a first article inspection. In the Aerospace and Defense industry when a new or revised part is produced for the first time, it must be verified to ensure all requirements have been met.

The major difference from AS9102 Rev A to Rev B is that Rev B includes Digital Product Design (DPD). When design requirements are in DPD format and 2D drawing information is not available for all applicable design requirements, DPD design characteristics shall be extracted verified, and included in the FAIR.
