The ACT is 3 hours long (technically 2 hours and 55 minutes). Including breaks, the exam takes 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete. If you sign up for the optional essay (the ACT Plus Writing), the test clocks in at 3 hours and 40 minutes or just over 4 hours with breaks.

When taking a practice test for the ACT, we suggest using a real bubble sheet, especially for timed sections.

If you are taking the four sections only, the full ACT test takes 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete. Question 39, “ing to the passage, which of the following actions…” The answer is “Constructing terraces.” In lines 41-45, the passage states that the farmers in the Negev region practiced runoff farming which involved making terraces and building large cisterns to house the water.

The English section is 45 minutes. The Math section is 60 minutes. And the Reading and Science sections are each 35 minutes. Students who take the Writing section at the end will stay an additional 40 minutes, including a five-minute break given after the Science section.

So, the ACT is 2 hours and 55 minutes (3 hours and 5 minutes if you include breaks) with 215 questions split among 4 (or 5) sections with varying time per question in each section.

The SAT and ACT generally cover the same topics. Both ACT and SAT scores are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships. Most colleges do not prefer one test over the other. Neither the SAT or ACT is harder than the other.
