A victim's impact statement letter should include: A *brief* summary of the harm or trauma suffered by the victim or family as a result of the crime. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that victim impact statements are constitutional; however, social scientists have issued certain recommendations as to how the prejudicial nature of such statements can be minimized. Victim impact statements outline the harm they have suffered as a result of the defendant's actions.

Please write or draw anything you would like the judge to know about how you feel because of what has happened to you. You may want to write about anything that has changed in your life or in your family. You can even tell a story or write a poem. You can add more paper if you run out of room.

A Victim Impact Statement is a written or oral statement presented to the court at the defendant's sentencing. Victims or survivors have a legal right to inform the judge about how the crime has affected their lives and can ask that a defendant receive a particular sentence.

Example: Every morning when I wake up, I have to remind myself that my attacker won't be able to hurt me today. If I don't tell myself that I simply can't get out of bed. Since I was assaulted I have lost the full function of my right leg.

In the case of a child victim, the mother is allowed to write and read a Victim Impact Statement that expresses the damages to the child victim. Victims or family members may also state their preference for an appropriate sentence for the defendant.

For example, you can say how many people you have helped (for example, a number of participants in an extension program or clinical trial), how long your work has lasted or will last or how many people might be reached by a report you intend to write. Numbers help understand the importance of your work.
