Under New York's homestead protection law, the amount property owners may declare exempt varies based on county location and range from $75,000 to $150,000. The exemption amount is doubled for married couples, which can be as much as $300,000 for a couple in Suffolk County, for example.

The Senior Citizen Homeowners' Exemption (SCHE) provides a reduction of 5 to 50% on New York City's real property tax to seniors age 65 and older. To be eligible for SCHE, you must be 65 or older, earn no more than $58,399 for the last calendar year, and the property must be your primary residence.

Businesses can apply for certificates that exempt them from paying sales tax on certain items. These certificates are issued by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF). Businesses complete the certificate, and provide it to the vendor. The vendor keeps the certificate and makes a sale without tax.

Use Tax - applies if you buy tangible personal property and services outside the state and use it within New York State. Clothing and footwear under $110 are exempt from New York City and NY State Sales Tax. Purchases above $110 are subject to a 4.5% NYC Sales Tax and a 4% NY State Sales Tax.

Please note: Being organized and operated as a not-for-profit organization does not, by itself, qualify an organization as a sales tax exempt organization. Religious, charitable, educational, and other organizations must apply to the Tax Department to obtain sales tax exempt status.
