FORMS ARE FLEXIBLE Children in Form 1 are between the ages of 6 and 8, but may be age 9. Children in Form 2 are between the ages of 9 and 12, occasionally over 12. Children in Form 3 are between the ages of 11 or 12 to 15. Children in Form 4 are between the ages of 14 to 17.

The biggest difference between the two approaches is with Charlotte Mason's use of good habits. She believed that punishments were useful in some instances while Maria Montessori was against all form of punishments, privileging self-discipline.

Miss Mason did not suggest children begin formal lessons until age six, and I have found through my experience that is the best age to start having children sit for lessons. Now, you can absolutely teach your child the alphabet and how to count before age six, but this should be a fun, no pressure time.
