A taxpayer who is not granted an automatic extension to file a federal income tax return must file Form D-410, Application for Extension for Filing Individual Income Tax Return, by the original due date of the return in order to receive an extension for North Carolina income tax purposes.

If you expect a refund, be sure to mail your return to the North Carolina Department of Revenue, PO Box R, Raleigh, NC 27634-0001. If you owe taxes, mail your return and payment to the North Carolina Department of Revenue , PO Box 25000, Raleigh, NC 27640-0640.

Do I still need to apply for an extension? Yes. If you have overpaid your North Carolina income tax and you expect to receive a refund from the State, but you are unable to file your individual income tax return by the original due date of the return, you should file an application of extension.

Due to the late approval of the state budget, which included multiple tax law changes, the Department has experienced delays processing returns. If you filed your return electronically and received an acknowledgment, your return has been received but may not have started processing.
