Get Food Security Survey Questions

FIES is a food insecurity severity experience matrix that relies on immediate responses of respondents to questions about their access to adequate food → to see the ability to access / obtain food. Sample units collected in FIES: household or individual.

Food insecurity status is assigned based on responses to the full household food security survey module. The module includes a series of 10 items for households without children and 18 items for households with children. (See Food Security in the US for more information on food insecurity.)

Food insecurity is categorized into four levels: High Food Security, Marginal Food Security, Low Food Security, and Very Low Food Security.

This definition has widely established the four pillars of food security: availability, accessibility, utilization and stability.

Food security includes at a minimum: The ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods. Assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (that is, without resorting to emergency food supplies, scavenging, stealing, or other coping strategies).

This module presents data and information about evolution of the food security and nutrition situation along the four dimensions of food security: availability, access, utilization and stability.
