Client's Responsibilities Provide a copy of the VFD order to the feed distributor (unless the issuing veterinarian sends it directly to the distributor). Maintain a copy of the VFD order for a minimum of 2 years.

Must keep original VFD for two years (Two year retention is also required for the client and feed distributor copies). Must provide VFD orders for inspection and copying by the FDA upon request. Some VFD medication will allow disease diagnosing by trained non-veterinary cattle care takers.

2) The VFD protects animals and people The FDA and drug manufacturers agreed to remove production uses (i.e., growth promotion, feed efficiency) for antibiotics that are medically important, and to require veterinary oversight for use of these antibiotics in feed (requires a VFD) or water (requires a prescription).

A Lawful VFD Has to be Complete veterinarian's name, address, and telephone number; client's name, business or home address, and telephone number; premises at which the animals specified in the VFD are located; date of VFD issuance; expiration date of the VFD; name of the VFD drug(s);

The VFD order is essentially a prescription issued by a veterinarian that allows producers to include a medically important antibiotic in feed. This regulation is specific to the feed or water supply containing the VFD drug, not to the type of animal that consumes the feed.

The Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) final rule is an important part of the agency's overall strategy to ensure the judicious use of medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals.

(3) The distributor must keep records of the receipt and distribution of all medicated animal feed containing a VFD drug for 2 years.

The most common medications that will affect beef cattle are chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline and Tylan®. You will not need a VFD to feed Bovatec® or Rumensin® by themselves. None of the products offered by CRYSTALYX® will require a VFD for your continued use.
