Rubrics are most often used to grade written assignments, but they have many other uses: They can be used for oral presentations. They are a great tool to evaluate teamwork and individual contribution to group tasks. Rubrics facilitate peer-review by setting evaluation standards.

The VALUE rubrics were developed by teams of faculty experts representing colleges and universities across the United States through a process that examined many existing campus rubrics and related documents for each learning outcome and incorporated additional feedback from faculty.

These criteria should be based on your team's purpose, roles, and responsibilities, as well as the expected outcomes and standards of your organization. You should also consider the different dimensions of teamwork, such as communication, cooperation, coordination, trust, conflict resolution, and creativity.

' " For example, a rubric for an essay might tell students that their work will be judged on purpose, organization, details, voice, and mechanics. A good rubric also describes levels of quality for each of the criteria.

First, the rubric is meant to assess the teamwork of an individual student, not the team as a whole. Therefore, it is possible for a student to receive high ratings, even if the team as a whole is rather flawed. Similarly, a student could receive low ratings, even if the team as a whole works fairly well.

Each rubric contains the same criteria: cooperation, organization, time frame, and presentation. The rubrics rate performance on each criteria on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score. The rubrics will be used to assess multiple groups and provide a total score.
