Get Physical Exam Checklist

Often a rabbit in pain will sit hunched up, unwilling to move. A rabbit that sits hunched up, with eyes half closed, and firm teeth grinding is likely in pain and needs a vet check form filled out and supervisor notified.

Some possible causes of illness in your rabbit could be mites, ear infection, kidney infection, dental problems, hairballs, digestive problems, heatstroke, GI stasis, obesity, snuffles, sore hocks, paralysis, fleas and lice.

Signs of pain include: > grinding teeth > rapid and shallow breathing > pulling hair > decreased grooming > hunched posture > lethargy > increased thirst and urination > a reluctance to move > bulging, strained, staring, or unfocused eyes.

A complete physical examination: from front to back of rabbit Head: eyes, facial nerves, ears, teeth. Thorax: auscultate lungs/heart. Abdomen: palpate kidneys, palpate for masses, palpate lymph nodes. Limbs: evaluate range of motion, palpate for crepitus, examine bottom of feet for pododermatitis, observe ambulation.

Be careful not to let the rabbit twist, jump or flip as they can seriously damage their spine. If a rabbit is aggressive, it can be helpful place a towel over the rabbit prior to lifting. Covering the eyes may also help to calm the rabbit, but be careful not to restrict breathing.

While you seek treatment, try to keep your rabbit hydrated and warm. A syringe with water or soft foods (applesauce or baby food) can assist. Depending on the condition, your vet may prescribe prescription medication to help your rabbit's condition.

Rabbit health checklist Eyes and nose - look out for discharge or mucus. Ears and teeth - check weekly for signs of problems. The skin around the rear end of your rabbit - look out for any urine staining or stuck faeces. Check weekly in cold weather and twice daily in dry, warm weather.

Subtle signs of illness in a rabbit vary and can include: Slow movement, staying still or hiding away. Breathing faster than usual or noisy breathing. Eating less and/or refusing certain foods. A change in thirst levels. Producing less stool or producing stool that looks different to normal.
